The widespread availability of video feeds underscores a fundamental problem: the difficulty of effectively watching all those video feeds. Studies show that even the most diligent staff lose focus trying to watch large numbers of cameras, with eyestrain ad fatigue reducing effectiveness even further. Video Analytic systems watch for you, looking for intruders, patterns of behavior, or other changes that you pre-program into the system. When the system detects unacceptable conditions or actions, it automatically alerts security staff.
There are multiple uses for video analytics, each with their own design challenges, strengths and weaknesses, and software and hardware:
- Behavioral analytics tracks the movements and actions of people. It is capable of detecting when people enter protected areas, loitering and other suspicious behavior, and even when a person has fallen down. Behavioral analytics are commonly used to secure large open areas, detect improper movement in airline gates, and other uses.
- Automatic License Plate Recognition: This type of analytics detects and reads vehicle license plates. Intelligent cameras are embedded with software that can detect and read license plates in a fraction of a second, detecting unauthorized or wanted vehicles.
