In today's public safety environment, the use of technology is rapidly changing the way emergencies are managed and mitigated. One of the most effective technologies to emerge is Mass Notification, which has been widely adopted by public safety, government, corporate, and educational institutions across the country.
Recent events have focused national attention on the need for mass communication during emergencies; prompting legislation requiring Mass Notification in some educational institutions.
Mass Notification systems use information technology and existing communications infrastructure to communicate with large numbers of people very quickly. The most common form of communication is recorded voice transmitted over telephone lines. However, with the widespread adoption of email and text messaging, many systems have expanded their capabilities to transmit electronic text, xml streams, triggers for electronic devices, or trunked and digital radio broadcast in addition to recorded voice messages. SDI recently implemented a Mass Notification System for a large Midwestern city that is capable of completing over 250,000 alerts in less than two hours.
