Project Description
SDI was contracted by a municipal housing authority, to create and implement Emergency Evacuation Plans and High-Rise Building Emergency Procedures for 182 residential, senior residential, and administration buildings.
Goals
The goal of this project is to meet the minimum requirements of the City of Chicago Municipal Code "High-Rise Buildings Emergency Procedure" Ordinance that the city mandated.

- Compiled buildings and residents information into a database for 182 buildings
- Developed Emergency Evacuation Procedures and Manual
- Created and field verify Computer-Aided Design Drafting (CADD) emergency evacuation route drawings
- Oversaw creation and installation of required signage
- Created tenant one-page information sheet in English and Spanish languages, explaining what residents should do in an emergency
- Conducted training for Fire Safety Director and Deputy Fire Safety Director and coordinated certification process
- Conducted evacuation drills for residents (various languages)
- Oversaw creation of a video for training residents on emergency evacuation procedures
Result
The housing authority has Emergency Plans and Procedures for all of their high-rise buildings. Building managers and the residents have been instructed and practiced what actions to take in an emergency situation. Manuals, hand-outs, and a video have been supplied to each building to support and remind the manager and residents what to do in an emergency. Clear, accurate, ADA-approved signage is located in each building. Building and resident information has been provided to the city's emergency management office and to the fire department for use during their response to an emergency.
